How to Use a Digital Tensimeter

If you have a history of hypertension, you’re required to have your blood pressure checked regularly. This requires visiting a clinic or community health center (Puskesmas) every time your blood pressure is checked.

However, to make things easier for people with hypertension, blood pressure monitors can now be used independently without the need for a professional. This eliminates the need for regular visits to a clinic, community health center, or doctor.

To achieve this, you can purchase and maintain a blood pressure monitor called a sphygmomanometer.

There are three types of sphygmomanometers, one of which is the digital sphygmomanometer. This type of sphygmomanometer is very easy to use and allows you to check your blood pressure anytime, anywhere.

One of the advantages of a digital sphygmomanometer is its fast blood pressure measurement, and it also stores previous measurements. So, how do you use a digital sphygmomanometer?

Here’s how to use a digital sphygmomanometer to better understand and accurately check your blood pressure:

How to Use a Digital Sphygmomanometer

Typically, normal blood pressure in adults is between 100 and 130 mmHg for systolic pressure and 60 to 90 mmHg for diastolic pressure.

Using a digital sphygmomanometer is very easy. You can start by pressing the start button, then follow these steps:

1. Place the cuff on your upper arm, with the bottom of the cuff 1 to 2 cm above your elbow, and the end of the cuff tube in the middle of your arm.

2. If you’re measuring with your right hand, the tube will be at your elbow. Therefore, ensure that the tube between the cuff and the sphygmomanometer is not crushed or pinched.

3. Then, tighten the cuff. Because blood pressure varies between the right and left arms, it’s best to use the same arm for each blood pressure check.

4. When taking the measurement, sit quietly, upright, and keep your feet flat on the floor. Position the cuff at the same height as your heart.

5. To obtain accurate results, it’s best to take the test when your body is stable.

Therefore, before taking the test, ensure you avoid strenuous activities, such as exercise, eating, drinking, bathing, smoking, and consuming alcohol and caffeine, for 30 minutes beforehand.

How to Lower Blood Pressure

To ensure your blood pressure is normal when taking a digital sphygmomanometer, you can follow these steps to lower your blood pressure:

1. Reduce salt intake.

2. Eat more healthy foods.

3. Reduce consumption of beverages containing caffeine.

However, if your blood pressure does not return to normal, consult a doctor immediately.
